Hello there,
I’m Josh Northeast, the owner and lead videographer of Jnortheast Films, based in Murwillumbah, northern NSW, Australia.
Specialising in marketing video content for businesses, my journey over the past ten years as a freelancer and five years running my company has been full of learning experiences.
Since school, creating short films has been more than a hobby; it has been my calling. This passion led to a significant achievement in my High School Certificate, placing me fifth in the state for Multimedia.
In 2023, I was honoured with the Tweed Regional and Northern Rivers “Outstanding Young Business Leader Award”. I was a finalist in the NSW Business Awards, marking a high point in my career.
After high school, I took up a role as a teacher’s aide, guiding multimedia students. Then, in 2018, I dived into the Visual Effects industry at CumulusVFX in Byron Bay, gaining valuable experience as a VFX supervisor for Netflix and Stan projects.
In 2020, I embraced my passion for videography and launched my production business full-time.
The core of my gear is the Lumix GH6, a versatile camera that I primarily pair with my Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 through a Metabones Speed Booster.
The Lumix GH5 remains a trusted B-cam, harmonising well with the Lumix GH6. Shooting in V-LOG maximises the dynamic range of these micro-four-thirds sensors.
Essential tools like the Atomos Ninja V and Shinobi help focus and preview LUTs in real time.
My lens collection includes the powerful Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8, a Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro for detailed shots, and the versatile Canon 24-105mm f/4. The H&Y REVORING, its unique mounting system and the Frii Designs TriLens have been game-changers for my on-the-go shoots.
I recently incorporated the Sakk Camera Saddle for stabilisation, which complements the Lumix’s in-body stabilisation.
The DJI RS 3 Pro gimbal is mainly for wide, establishing shots, while my 24” Rhino Slider, though underutilised, remains a valued part of my kit. On the other hand, my Manfrotto monopod and tripods have been heavily used on many shoots.
The DJI Mavic 3 has been a fantastic addition, succeeding the DJI Phantom 4 Pro. Its compact size and 10-bit 4K D-Log capabilities are perfect for aerial shots.
In lighting, I’ve moved from basic Neewer LED panels to sophisticated Aputure lights, including the Aputure MC, Aputure Amaran 200D, and Aputure Amaran T4C, allowing for more cinematic setups.
Sound quality is paramount, and it is managed with Rode Wireless Go II, a Rode VidMic, and the Zoom H4N for event recordings.
My post-production suite is powered by a custom-built PC with an Intel CPU Core i9-9900K, GeForce 4080 RTX GPU, and 64GB RAM. I edit using Davinci Resolve, with footage stored on a Synology 8 Bay NAS running to my PC through 10Gb ethernet, ensuring a seamless workflow.
In this industry, the temptation of new gear is ever-present. However, I’ve learned that strategic investments are key rather than impulsive purchases. It’s about enhancing workflow, not just accumulating gear.
Thank you, ShotKit, for this platform to share my story. To all aspiring videographers, remember that the essence of our craft lies in the stories we tell and how we tell them, not just the fancy gear we own.
Happy shooting!
