The “Everything” Computer | Velocity Micro Blog

In the ever-evolving world of content creation and gaming, having a PC that can handle both tasks with ease is essential for many users. Whether you’re a video editor, CAD user, graphic designer, or an avid gamer, choosing the right components is crucial to ensure optimal performance and a seamless user experience. In this guide, we will explore the best components for building a PC that excels in both content creation and gaming.
Processor (CPU):

For content creation, a multi-core processor is vital. AMD Ryzen 9 or Intel Core i9 CPUs are excellent choices, providing the necessary horsepower for tasks like video editing and rendering, which are generally heavily threaded.
For gaming, a high clock speed is the most important spec. Fortunately, the high core count Ryzen and Intel Core CPUs also have high single core frequencies and boost speeds, meaning they’ll handle games as well as they do professional applications
Make sure you research whatever programs you’ll be using in your creation process – some may require more CPU than GPU, or vice versa.

Graphics Card (GPU):

A powerful GPU is essential for gaming and accelerates rendering tasks in content creation. NVIDIA GeForce RTX or AMD Radeon RX series GPUs are top choices, offering real-time ray tracing for stunning visuals in games and efficient rendering for content creation.
Same as above, keep in mind what your content creation programs use most, GPU or CPU. That being said, games are truly GPU focused, so if your priorities skew towards gaming, don’t be shy to spend a bit more here.
If the goal is a PC that “does it all,” we recommend staying away from professional Quadro graphics and sticking to Geforce. Those cards are just more versatile overall.

Memory (RAM):

Content creation applications often demand a significant amount of RAM. Aim for 32GB or 64GB to ensure smooth multitasking and faster data access.
Opt for high-speed DDR5 RAM, as it can positively impact gaming performance as well as accelerate renders
ECC is not going to be necessary, unless your work skews heavily toward the pro side. Even then, we only recommend considering it with 128GB+ configs.

Storage:

Nowadays, PCIe SSDs are by far the fastest form of drive you can get for your desktop, while still being relatively affordable. We recommend getting at least one at 1TB, though because storage prices have come down so much over the past year, the additional investment for 2TB or more is pretty minimal.
If you truly need the space, but won’t be accessing the bulk of your storage frequently, we’d also recommend getting a high-capacity HDD, or even an external drive to keep in a safe space.

Motherboard:

The top priority of your motherboard is compatibility. Select a motherboard that supports your desired CPU and offers features like multiple PCIe slots, USB ports, and enough RAM slots for the rest of your build.
Outside of that, consider motherboards with Wi-Fi and bluetooth capabilities, or whatever other bells and whistles you’d most often make use of.

Power Supply (PSU):

Choose a power supply unit with enough wattage to accommodate the GPU and other components comfortably. A little headroom goes a long way for future upgradability, as well!
With 850W or higher, look for a PSU with an 80 PLUS Gold or Platinum certification for energy efficiency and long term cost savings.

Cooling:

An efficient cooling solution is crucial to maintain stable performance during heavy workloads and gaming sessions.
Consider aftermarket air or liquid coolers for the CPU, and ensure proper case ventilation with additional fans. This is especially important for higher end and unlocked CPUs.

Case:

Opt for a spacious and well-ventilated case to accommodate the components comfortably.
Cases with cable management features for a clean and organized build.
You should always prioritize function here, but a beautiful case can allow for a desktop that adds to a room or home office instead of needing to be hidden away.

Peripherals:

Invest in a high-quality monitor with a high refresh rate for an immersive gaming experience. This is especially crucial if you have a powerful GPU – you’ll want a monitor that can flex your full video capabilities. Keep an eye out for high-color accuracy & refresh rates (144hz and above). For games, you’ll also want to make sure your display is as low latency as possible.
Choose a mechanical keyboard and a precise, high-DPI gaming mouse for enhanced control in games. We like brands like Keychron and Logitech, respectively.
A good set of speakers or headphones with a microphone is essential for content creation tasks like video editing and voice overs. Keep an eye out for quality all-in-one mics, look into mic setups including mixers and phantom power, or just a quality headset with an outstanding condenser mic. Pick whatever setup meets your needs closest.

Building a PC that excels in both content creation and gaming requires careful consideration of each component. By selecting a powerful CPU, GPU, sufficient RAM, and a well-rounded set of peripherals, you can create a system that caters to the demands of modern content creation and gaming alike.
